A Brief History of Life Counters in MTG and DND
Life counters have come a long way since their inception, evolving from simple tools to track life totals in Magic: The Gathering (MTG) and hit points in Dungeons & Dragons (DND). Let's delve into the fascinating history of these essential gaming accessories.
Pewter Devices Adorned with Artwork or Miniature Figures
In the early days, pewter devices were sold by magazines like Scrye and The Duelist. These counters featured beautiful artwork or miniature figures that added an artistic touch to gameplay. However, they lacked durability and convenience compared to modern solutions.
Spindown Life Counters as a Popular Alternative Option
- The Spindown: A popular alternative emerged with the introduction of Spindown life counters - 20-sided dice designed specifically for tracking life totals. While visually appealing, they could be easily knocked over or misplaced during intense matches.
- Circle Spinners: Wizards of the Coast experimented with various designs such as circle spinners which provided more stability but still had limitations when it came to accurately displaying large numbers.
- Double-Wheeled Counters: To address this issue, double-wheeled counters were introduced alongside expansion sets like Ravnica: City of Guilds (source).
Today, innovative solutions like the LifeLink Counter combine style, durability, and convenience to provide an unparalleled gaming experience for MTG and DND players alike.

This is my first set of metal dice, and they live up to the hype! I got a 7pc set and a dice tray. Both met my expectations, the dice have 'hefty' feel to them and are satisfying to roll.

Great material, great weight, fantastic customer service
I live out in a small town where USPS doesn't deliver. Die Hard Dice contacted me within a few hours to confirm my shipping address and were willing to use alternative shipping methods to make sure it got to me on time. They added a ton of extra goodies into my shipment, and they went above and beyond with their customer service. The quality of all the dice I got was fantastic. I know where I'll be buying all my dice from now!
Man, these came in and I've been munching on them ever since! They taste strangely salty but also a bit sweet. Must be something they put int he blue ink. 10/10 will buy again when I'm done eating this set.
I was immediately interested when I saw these dice but when they finally arrived, the feel and the look of them is even better then I expected - very solid, the numbers are shiny, yet readable because of the recess of the rest of the dice face and the texture of it.
I love these dice, and appreciate the rounded corners on the d8/d4. They're beautiful and fit my Circle of Stars Druid perfectly. I do find that the blue numbers are a bit hard to read sometimes, especially when playing in a more dimly lit gaming space. The dice are gorgeous, but you will likely find yourself squinting at them now and then.
I got these dice to complete a set and they are just gorgeous. I am very happy with them.
